Grillin' and Chillin' Bug Hop

Welcome to BugBites first ever Bug Hop, Grillin’ & Chillin’ Bug Hop!

To celebrate the beginning of summer, Barb over at BugBites is hosting two consecutive weekends of Bug Hops.

This weekend it is all about the Grillin’, May 28-30.

If you've come from visiting Deb's blog at http://debspaperpassion.blogspot.com, you're in the right place! If you've just happened across my blog and would like to play along with our Grillin’ & Chillin’ Bug Hop, click HERE to start from the beginning.

Each designer along the bug trail is featuring a project based on the Grillin’ & Chillin’ theme. What’s more exciting is you can participate too by creating a project and linking it up over at BugBites for a chance to win a Big Prize.

But, there’s a twist. Your project must included at least one Cricut cut and at least one of the critters that have been hidden within some of the bug stop blogs. Be sure to visit all the bug stops to find all your critter choices.

While you are looking for the critters, be sure to check out the blog candy that each designer has to offer you. You don't want to miss out on any of it!

My project today is a serving tray that I altered. It's just what you need to carry all that meat out to the grill! I went with this supper cute Hula Girl from Life's a Beach

Yes that is my George Forman Grill! We don't own a BBQ grill yet. But I digress. This is what the tray looked like when I started:

Cute, but not really my style. It made for the perfect altered item. First I spray painted the whole thing white ( I used 3 coats to get even coverage).

The I cut out my hottie Hula Girl at 10" using solid colored cardstock. I used up most of my scraps of blue cardstock to make the waves for the background. I used a Fiskars boarder punch on the cardstock to get the little blue wave edge.

The bottom is sand paper. My hubby thought it looked a little bare so I added the pink seashells, also from Life's a Beach. Then I covered the whole thing with Mod Podge to make it waterproof.

I had to let the Mod Podge dry for a few hours before adding the next coat. I used about 4 coats, and I might add one more for good measure. So that's my totally hot Grillin' project.

Now on to the bog candy! I have some super cute Hawaiian themed rub-ons (Almost used them for this project), a Hawaiian frame kit, and some super versital Prima flower. I love to buy flowers in white because you can use all kinds of stuff to change the color of the flowers to match your project! You can spray them with Smooch or Glimmer Mist, color them in with Copic Markers, or use chalks to make them match. To enter please leave a comment on this post. You must be a follower to win. Really sorry, I am only able to ship to US or Canada. It's just too expensive to ship international, or else I would! For an extra chance to win ( yes I do add these in before I pick a winner) like me on Facebook and leave a comment there. (The link to my Facebook is on the top of the sidebar at the right.)

Your next stop is Jessica's blog, http://chick-n-scrap.blogspot.com. See what she has in store for you today. Happy Crafting!

Remember, once you have hopped to all the bug stops, it's your turn to show us your Grillin’ & Chillin’ project.

Make sure to include a Cricut cut somewhere on your project, include one of the hidden critters and link up your project over at BugBites by Midnight CST May 30 to be eligible for the big prize.

  35. Hey Amber!

You hit it out of the park on this one! I just love this idea and you did such a beautiful job on it! I've been wanting to do one of these trays for awhile but was not quite sure how to go about it. Thanks for sharing the instructions on it, I'm going to make a goal to do one before the end of summer. Omg, did I really just use end and summer in the same sentence?

    TFS!

  39. OMG it is adorable!!!!! I love all the elements you added. I do a lot of altered items and found a suggestion to add a coat of polyurethane once you're finished with the mod podge. This helps to eliminate the tackiness.

  41. Hi, peeking in from Scrappin Momma, I commented on this tray before, but I will say it again, I just love it! I think I am going to do one with crabs on it because I noticed that my Chesapeake Beach home is sadly lacking in Crabs!

Please come by and visit my new blog when you get a chance, I am giving away some candy on June 16 (my son's 29th birthday)
